Growing up in a small town near the beaches of North and South Carolina, Nancy Hughes Miller developed a love for the coast. One of her favorite places from childhood and now is Sunset Beach, NC — and it's a big influence on her art. The fragile beauty of the area inspires Nancy, especially scenes devoid of human activity and disruption — deserted beaches, tranquil marshes, colorful seas — vistas connected to the sky.

Inspired by beauty in the landscape, I seek to capture a bold yet quiet impression of everyday nature — as the colors of sky, earth and water converge on the horizon.

When recently asked how my art might compare to the work of — or be influenced by — the 19th century Luminist artists, I had a vague idea, but after doing some Google/Wiki research, I found we have much in common!

Luminism is an American landscape painting style of the 1850s – 1870s, characterized by effects of light on the landscape, an aerial perspective and a smooth surface concealing brushstrokes. Luminist landscapes emphasize tranquility and often depict calm, reflective water and a soft, hazy sky — offering a ‘poetic experience of nature’ or ‘a contemplative perception of nature’.

Marsh Paintings

I have a love for my native North Carolina's barrier islands— but not just for their sandy beaches. Relaxing and soothing to view are their tidal, salt marshes—vast wetlands, separating the islands from the mainland. Especially inspiring in mid-summer, the marsh grasses turn brilliant yellow-green. Combined with varying colors in the sky and water, this color is featured in my marsh paintings. Colorful scenes of inlet waters winding to the ocean or large clouds on the horizon, I hope my art brings a calming influence to the viewer’s mood, the way this landscape affects me.

Cloudspotting: Appreciating Nature’s Poetry

1251 Avenue of the Americas, 49th & 6th Avenue, Lobby Level, NYC 

April 6, 2017 – July 6, 2017

RCSFA is calling attention to clouds, “nature’s poetry” with the opening of a new exhibition, Cloudspotting, at the lobby gallery at 1251 Avenue of the Americas in Manhattan on April 7. The exhibit brings together the work of painters, Nancy Hughes Miller, Jill Basham and Laura Guese, collage artist, Beth Hoeckel, and photographers, Mitch Dobrowner and Bryan Hightower. These American artists are inspired by the ever-changing skies in the regions in which they live and work. Clouds and the sky have always captured the imagination of artists. This exhibition, presented in a busy corporate lobby in midtown Manhattan, aims to slow people down to appreciate clouds in the artwork and therefore in the real world. Not many things in nature rival their variety, drama or their sublime beauty.

Cloudspotting, April 7, 2017 – July 6, 2017 is part of the art program at 1251 AoA made possible by Mitsui Fudosan America, Hines and RCSFA, an art consulting firm that provides exhibition and art advisory services to corporations, museums and historic collections. The gallery at 1251 AoA is located in the lobby of 1251 Avenue of the Americas, 49th & 6th Avenue. It is open to the public, M-F: 7 a.m. -7 p.m.
